In the many-cultured India from the ancient times various calendars and eras were used. Any day could be dated approximately by 30 various Indian systems of dating. In order to establish certain order in the calendars of the country the Government of India adopted the National calendar for civil and public purposes in 1957 C.E. The year of this calendar starts from the day, which immediately follows the day of the Vernal equinox. In a non leap year it coincides with March 22, and in a leap year with March 21 of Gregorian calendar. A non leap year has 365 days, a leap year — 366 days.
